The European Commission yesterday recommended an 8.5 per cent cut in Europe's fishing fleet, as an attempt to preserve endangered species.

Fishermen argue that the move could lead to the loss of 28,000 jobs, while others complain that the plans have been watered down with the intervention of European president, Romano Prodi, and Spanish prime minister, Jose Maria Aznar.
