Boateng - the reluctant role model

Britain's first black cabinet minister is a flamboyant former radical who propelled his way through Labour's ranks.

But entering the cabinet yesterday, Paul Boateng signalled that he did not want to be a flag-bearer.

"My colour is part of me, but I don't choose to be defined by my colour," he said.

Today's Telegraph reports that his promotion is no surprise.
