Government criticised over gridlocked Britain

The government's failure to deliver on its transport policies will result in Britain being gridlocked in the near future, according to a new report.

The Commission for Integrated Transport's first annual audit of the 10 year transport plan, to be published today, says that little progress has been made and suggests that some sectors have gone into reverse.

David Begg, the commission chairman who was appointed by the government to monitor its transport progress, said: "The reality is that, unless we take action to change behaviour, traffic congestion, particularly in our cities, is going to get worse."
