Britain bids farewell to the Queen Mother

The Queen Mother was last night laid to rest during a short private service at St George's Chapel in Windsor Castle.

Earlier, up to a million people were said to have gathered in London to pay their final respects.

During a service at Westminster Abbey, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr George Carey, told mourners that "like the sun, she bathed us in her warm glow".

While the Telegraph describes "The nation's final tribute", the Times headlines says simply "Strength, dignity and laughter".

The Mirror believes that the Queen Mother's death has "reignited the British people's faith in and love for the monarchy".

The Guardian headline describes the funeral as a "Farewell to a mother, a queen and a symbol of a bygone age".

Mail columnist Melanie Phillips asks: "Were we also mourning our self-centred culture of hedonism and philistinism with its trashing of our history and traditions?"
