Former head of Middlesbrough CID and disgraced supporter of the "zero tolerance" policing policy, Ray Mallon, is the favourite to become the town's mayor in the forthcoming election.

In a poll published yesterday Mallon, nicknamed Robocop, received 40 per cent support compared to nine per cent for the Labour candidate.

However, 42 per cent of those surveyed have not yet decided which way to vote.
