European perceptions challenged

British media should avoid euro-scepticism, while the European Union should become more open and accessible to the public, a conference concluded over the weekend.

Speaking at the conference, the former foreign secretary Lord Hurd said: "The Europe of perception is part of the Europe of substance. Those who have a responsibility for perceptions have a major role."

The conference was organised by the Guardian and the Club of Three, a network of European politicians and diplomats.
