Ministers are to press ahead with proposals to expand the number of faith schools, despite unhappiness with the plans among Labour backbenchers.

Downing Street said an amendment to the education bill, tabled by Frank Dobson, requiring faith schools to give one quarter of their places to children from other faiths or of no faith was unworkable because it would not take account of local circumstances.
