Labour's coordinator at the June 2001 general election, Douglas Alexander, has warned that a cycle of political cynicism risks damaging social democracy.

The industry minister argues that Labour should never again run a centralised campaign from Millbank and should instead focus direct techniques and local issues.

He also warned that Labour's core constituency "were often the most disengaged from politics".
