Local authorities have criticised the government for failing to explain how the additional costs of a new EU law on car disposal will be met.

The End of Life Vehicle Directive, to be introduced in April, says that old vehicles must be dismantled at licensed plants for recycling.

Local councils believe the law will lead to an increased number of abandoned and burnt-out vehicles.
