Union chief warns over rail safety
Vernon Hince, assistant general secretary of the RMT union, has said rail safety is being put at risk by a failure to invest in maintenance of the network infrastructure.
The risks of an accident were getting "steadily worse", he said, because not enough was being spent in areas like rail renewal.
The Independent reports that a review of the national rail timetable could see local services cut back in favour of increasing the frequency and reliability of express and freight services.
