Brown under fire over rising welfare spending
The chancellor is facing growing disquiet within cabinet over his plans to tackle poverty after new figures revealed that Britain will soon be spending a third more on welfare than when Labour came to office.
The detail of the pre-budget report reveals that extra help for families, pensioners and the disabled will increase the level of state handouts by £32.5 billion - an increase to a record £125 billion in year 2003-04.
The chancellor is also under fire after it was revealed that the Treasury had failed to meet 20 of the 50 targets it pledged three years ago.
