Trade and industry secretary Patricia Hewitt yesterday warned the French government not to hold back a new world trade round with its protectionist policies on agriculture.

"It is essential that those European countries that have been dragging their feet now recognise the inevitability of change and send a strong signal that the Common Agricultural Policy reform is something we will do, and do soon," she said.
