McConnell becomes first minister
Jack McConnell strolled to victory in the race to become Scotland's latest first minister yesterday. Putting allegations about his past indiscretions to one side, the Labour MSP said he wanted to improve public services and pledged to operate "openly and transparently".
Opposition MSPs said his election as Labour's candidate for the post was further evidence of the culture of "cronyism" which is prevalent in Scottish Labour politics.
