Blair told of Railtrack woes

The transport secretary, Stephen Byers, told Tony Blair yesterday that the cash crisis at Railtrack was even worse than the government had thought when it decided to force the company into administration.

Byers told the prime minister that the funding gap was significantly above the £3.6 billion claimed by the firm's bosses.

In an interview Byers tells the Mirror he has no regrets about putting the company into administration.
