The Ministry of Defence police will gain new powers to arrest people anywhere in the country under plans contained in the government's anti-terrorism bill.

The MoD police, all of whom possess firearms, will have the same powers as officers in regional forces in "any police area", according to the bill.

At present the MoD police has jurisdiction inside or near bases, otherwise it has to seek permission of local police before starting investigations.
