EU call for UK tax cuts on fags and booze

The EU commissioner for internal markets, Frits Bolkestein has criticised the level of excise taxes on cigarettes and alcohol. He used his first visit to Downing Street to call for a cut to the taxes, the highest in the EU.

A European Commission survey finds that the UK's customs authorities and bureaucracy make it the worst EU country to trade with.
