Jack McConnell yesterday mounted a purge of Brownites in the Scottish executive. In a wide-ranging reshuffle of his executive, the new first minister sacked four ministers, replacing them with his own supporters. A fifth minister, Susan Deacon, resigned rather than take a demotion from health to social justice.

The reshuffle has been criticised by some in the media as a defensive act of cronyism.
