The first salary bonuses for NHS doctors and nurses meeting performance targets were announced by government ministers yesterday.

In an attempt to promote an entrepreneurial culture within the public services, all the employees at the Norfolk and Norwich NHS Trust will recieve a £600 bonus if they meet targets to increase hospital admissions and improve patient satisfacton.

Nine other schemes will be piloted, but the incentives will be offered to teams of workers meeting collective targets - rather than individual bonuses which might pit staff against each other.
