Health secretary Alan Milburn has pledged to double the number of NHS patients being treated in the private sector to free up resources and relieve congestion in hospital accident and emergency departments.

As part of a £100 million package to relieve pressure on accident and emergency departments the NHS will spend £40 million procuring up to 25,000 operations in the private sector.
