Environment secretary Margaret Beckett claimed during a keynote speech on Wednesday that acid rain emissions caused by farms should be capped. Environmentalists at the speech, delivered at the Royal Agricultural Hall, were quick to point out that this could be Labour's first tax on "bullshit".

Her comments follow research showing that acid rain is caused more by ammonia emissions than previously thought.
