Sunday Express journalist Yvonne Ridley, arrested by the Taliban on the Afghan border will face a trial for entering the country illegally, the country's leaders announced yesterday.

The Taliban's deputy foreign minister said that "we have to determine if she really is a journalist or she had some other intentions."

Jack Straw, the foreign secretary, contacted Ridley's family yesterday to assure them that the government is doing everything possible to secure her release.
