The government is to press ahead with plans to pilot extended court sittings in a bid to beat the backlog in the justice system and deliver "instant justice" to thugs, drunks and persistent teenage offenders. Downing Street has confirmed that it will pilot the plan, which could see courts sitting at weekends and until midnight on weekdays, in London and Manchester from next year.
