The latest case, in Cumbria, comes seven months after the epidemic began and indicate that there is still a long way to go before the disease is wiped out, contrary to Tony Blair's assurance before the general election that the fight against the disease was "in the home straight".

The outbreak is now the worst in the world in terms of the total number of animals slaughtered.
