The government is to speed up the introduction of fast track surgery hospitals in a bid to meet its pledge that no one should wait more than three months for a routine operation.

Plans to introduce eight diagnostic and treatment centres by 2004 have been increased to 12 and the total planned for 2008 has risen from 20 to 29.
