Charles Kennedy is set to sever formal Lib Dem links with Labour as the party gears up for new strategy of hard-hitting opposition to the government.

Kennedy is expected to end the joint cabinet committee set up by Tony Blair and the then Lib Dem leader, Paddy Ashdown, four years ago.
