David Blunkett has pledged tough action against rioters following disturbances in Bradford.

The home secretary told the Commons that "we will not accept the destruction of hard-won improvements in the most difficult areas of our country". Blunkett said he would examine policing methods for speed and effectiveness but denied reports that he said the police should use tear gas to deal with similar situations. He also announced that local councils will expand summer sporting and cultural activities to encourage commiunities to mix.

Labour MPs called for a ban on far-right organisations and police use of water cannon to prevent a reoccurrence of the rioting in Bradford.
