The Welsh Conservatives are heading for an annihilation similar to that of 1997 with polls giving Labour a lead of 35 points - 55 per cent over 20 per cent.

Plaid Cymru is in third poll place on 14 per cent and the Lib Dems in fourth with 10 per cent.
