European fishing commissioner, Franz Fischler, is pressing for fishing quota cuts of 40 - 50 per cent to halt the collapse of fish stocks.

The cuts, which would devastate the British industry, would effect fishers not just of cod and hake but fishers of haddock, sole, whiting and plaice which take a by-catch of cod or hake.
