As defence secretary Geoff Hoon considers lifting the ban on women serving in a number of major infantry regiments, the head of the Royal Marines has warned that they could be a "cultural" problem.

Major-General Robert Fry said he was "gender blind" but the number of women who would pass as commandos would be so small as to cause problems.
