US senate goes to Democrats
US president, George W Bush has suffered a setback with the resignation of a Republican senator, James Jeffords, who is expected to become an independent.
The senator's resignation will hand control of the senate to the Democrats giving the it the power to block Bush's legislative agenda. The senate yesterday approved, virtually unchanged, Bush's 11-year $1.3 trillion tax cut plan.
