Railtrack has demanded a government cash hand-out of £2 billion.

The request follows a cash subsidy of £1.5 billion seven weeks ago. The crisis facing the company could lead to demands of up to £6 billion in state money - a cost, notes the Guardian, that is more than double the cost of taking it back into public ownership.
