Long-suffering Virgin Trains passengers should consider boycotting the company's services in protest at the latest rail fare increases, the transport minister, Lord Macdonald, has said.

The minister said he was powerless to stop above inflation fare increases such as the 10 per cent figure announced by Virgin last week.
