A Tory MP is calling for people who consider themselves to be "English" to make it plain on their census forms. Gerald Howarth, the MP for Aldershot, has complained that there is no separate box for the English in the ethnicity section of the form, though there is for the Irish and the Scottish.

The campaign is launched on St Georges Day and mirrors a similar move by Plaid Cymru in Wales. Howarth said that the wording of the form is "sinister" and "designed to bring about the annihilation of Englishness and the promotion of multi-culturalism".
