David Shayler, a former MI5 agent accused of breaking the Official Secrets Act, yesterday sought to put the government in the dock saying: "We are going to put the British state on trial."

Shayler is accused of leaking information regarding MI5 operations to a Sunday newspaper, but he is claiming that secrets legislation contravenes the Human Rights Act. His trial is the first challenge to the Official Secrets Act under recent human rights legislation.
