Labour tax record under attack
The Conservatives have backed a report, from the Institute of Fiscal Studies, that shows the rate of tax increases has trebled since 1997, particularly affecting the poorest 20 per cent of the population. Under John Major's leadership the average annual tax rise was 1.3 pre cent and under Margaret Thatcher it was two per cent. The current average for years since 1997 is four per cent.
