Tories plan protection for 'have a go' heroes
Shadow home secretary Ann Widdecombe has said that members of the public who injured criminals while going to the aid of a victim would not face prosecution under new Tory plans. The law would have a built-in assumption that force used in stopping a crime was reasonable.
Robin Corbett, the Labour chair of the Home Affairs committee, said that the remarks were an "astonishing attack" on the police and amounted to a "licence for violence".
