The CBI warns today that the UK is facing a sharp economic slowdown because of the economic impact of the foot and mouth outbreak and the knock-on effects of the American downturn.

The combined effects have forced the CBI to cut economic growth predictions from 2.5 per cent to 2 per cent and warn that unemployment will rise by 50,000 over the next year.
