William Hague's trumpeted "kitchen table" re-branding of the Conservative Party was ditched with no explanation, according to papers seen by the Telegraph. The papers show the how the party wanted to focus on issues such as health and education which were being discussed around the nation's kitchen tables.

Six months after the policy of modernisation was launched, it was speedily abandoned by Hague and the main supporters of the programme had left Central Office.
