Reports from the National Audit Office and the Audit Commission cast doubts on the government's ability to deliver promises to increase the number of NHS nurses by 20,000.

One in six nursing students are leaving courses and 20 per cent do not take up nursing after training.

The reports highlight the need for increased investment in teaching staff and training, a reduction in drop-out rates and greater commitment to the training of existing staff.
