Speaking to journalists yesterday the new chief of the defence staff, Admiral Sir Michael Boyce, said the aggression required for frontline fighting was not a "natural female trait". He added he would do nothing that would compromise operational capability.

He also questioned what the new EU rapid reaction force could achieve. "Nato has hung together pretty well for 50-plus years. We're not going to do much better with a parallel organisation," he said.
