Cod's preservation is haddock's destruction
Fishermen banned from fishing cod in the North Sea under EU fish recovery measures are decimating juvenile haddock stocks - killing 10 for every adult fish landed. An industry source said: "The cod conservation plan has turned into a haddock destruction plan".
Damage to comparatively good juvenile haddock stocks, seen to have more of a future than cod for a beleaguered Scottish industry, is regarded by many as a "short-sighted" and a particularly British problem.
