UK on disease alert
Large areas of the countryside are out of bounds with the confirmation of the second Essex case of foot-and-mouth disease. A third suspected outbreak is under investigation in Northumberland.
Agriculture minister, Nick Brown, has appealed to people to stay away from farms and agricultural land to avoid spreading the virulent airborne virus.
Hunting has been banned for seven days and angling placed under severe restrictions.
