Gold sales pay off for Treasury

Treasury officials told the Commons Public Accounts Committee yesterday that the government had made a small profit on its decision to sell gold reserves and buy foreign currency.

Despite the fall in the value of the euro, interest received on the investments had led to a £23 million profit on the transactions, they said.
