The Ministry of Defence is to screen soldiers who served in the Balkan and Gulf conflicts for exposure to depleted uranium.

In a growing international controversy the MoD insists that the shells pose "minimal risk" to soldiers but nevertheless defence secretary, Geoff Hoon, is expected to announce the screening programme in the Commons on Thursday.
