Concern is mounting around Europe over the use by Nato of depleted uranium shells during its campaigns in the Balkans.

France, Italy, Belgium, Holland and Portugal have reported soldiers who had served in the Balkans being diagnosed with cancer. EC president Romano Prodi has also expressed concern. Britain's Ministry of Defence said there was no evidence that the shells caused any ill effects.
