Hague attacks Blair's 'broken promises'
William Hague yesterday sought to put Labour's failure to deliver on health, education, transport and crime at the heart the Conservatives general election campaign.
Speaking at the launch of new poster campaign Hague attacked Blair's "broken promises" and branded prime minister Tony Blair the "Great Pretender" on tax and spending.
"The next Conservative government will show that the way to improve our public services is to accompany extra investment with real reform - so that the money is not wasted, that it does go to the classroom and the hospital operating theatre and front-line policeman. And day in day out, between now and polling day, in campaigns such as the one we launch today, we will relentlessly expose the broken promises, high taxes and failure to deliver of a prime minister who, to borrow from that old song, has become The Great Pretender. "
The posters show a brassed-off voter in a variety of situations under the slogans: "You've paid the tax, so where are the police?", "You've paid the tax, so where's your operation?", "You've paid the tax, so where are the teachers?", "You've paid the tax, so where are the trains?''.
The Mirror's Paul Routledge has produced a spoof poster "You are the Tories, so where are your brains?" to put the Conservatives' "farcical campaign into perspective".
