Boothroyd calls for reform
Betty Boothroyd told MPs yesterday that she believed the system used to select the speaker should be reformed.
She told the Commons Procedure Committee that the current system broke down when several candidates put themselves forward for the speakership.
Her comments followed the widely-ridiculed process which selected Michael Martin from a slate of 12 hopeful candidates.
