Extra cash for manufacturing blackspots
Trade and industry secretary, Stephen Byers, will today outline how an extra £54 million will help those regions suffering most from changes to the face of the UK manufacturing industry.
The closure of the Corus steelworks in Llanwern and the possibility of job losses at the Nissan plant in Tyneside have necessitated the payout, and DTI officials say that this represents the beginning of a new regional policy, instead of the "region blind" policy previously operated.
The cash will go on promoting innovation and enterprise, to get "all parts of our regions firing on all cylinders".
