Alex Salmond, the former SNP leader, yesterday attacked the "split" between London and Edinburgh over the provision of free nursing care for the elderly.

His comments came at Helen Liddell's first Commons session as Scottish secretary and follows Henry McLeish's decision to opt for totally free nursing care in Scotland.
