UN forces appeal falls on deaf ears

The Telegraph reports that personal appeals from Tony Blair and Robin Cook for more troops for the UN peacekeeping force in Sierra Leone have failed.

According to reports, British ministers have approached every other EU leader - and leaders from other countries including Nelson Mandela - looking for high-quality troops to replace the current UN force in the area. Only Slovakia has responded positively to the requests, promising logistical support.
